Did You Know?

  • On average, a person has the opportunity to recycle over 25,000 cans in a lifetime. The energy saved in recycling just one aluminum can is enough to power a television for 3 hours.

  • In just one year, Americans discard enough office paper to build a 12-foot high wall of paper that would reach from Seattle to New York.

  • Making paper from recycled products creates 95% less air pollutants.

  • Recycling a 3-foot high stack of newspapers is enough to save a tree.

  • Glass can be recycled an infinite number of times…it never wears out.

  • In 2005, Americans recycled 3.3 billion pounds of post-consumer plastics, such as plastic drinking bottles.

  • Recycling one glass jar saves enough to light a conventional light 60-watt bulb for 4 hours…or an 11-watt CFL bulb for 20 hours.

  • The plastic recycling industry employs over 52,000 workers.

  • Recycling five plastic soda bottles provides enough fiber to make an extra large T-shirt, a square foot of carpet or enough fiber to fill a ski jacket.

20 Easy Ways to Go Green:

  1. Go Recycled! – Use recycled office products and furniture whenever you can. Most can be recycled again, once you’re done with them, so they help reduce waste, time after time!

  2. Clean Green- Environmentally friendly cleaners are not only good for the earth; they’re good for you, too! Most are nontoxic and free of irritants, so cleaning is more pleasant.

  3. Lights Out! – If a room isn’t being used for 15 minutes or more, turn off the lights.

  4. Go Natural – Take advantage of natural lighting, in spaces where it’s adequate for work.

  5. Power Down – At the end of the workday, turn off your computer to save power. If it’s plugged into a power strip, turn that off too. You’ll save even more.

  6. Nap Time! – Set computers to “go to sleep” automatically, when they’re not being used. These short breaks can result in big savings in energy.

  7. Travel Less, Save More – Videoconference or teleconference whenever you can. You’ll save time and money, plus you’ll help reduce emissions in the environment.

  8. Clean the Air – Accent your office with green plants. They add a natural touch, while helping reduce indoor pollution.

  9. Recycle It! – Place recycling containers for recyclable materials (paper, plastic, steel, aluminum and glass) in a convenient location in your office. Remind employees to recycle everything they can. Be sure to post instructions near the containers, so everyone knows what to do.

  10. Bring Your Own Bag – If you “brown bag” at lunch, use a recycle bag instead of paper or plastic lunch bags.

  11. Reuse it! – Buy rewritable CDs and DVDs for data storage and reuse them over and over again.

  12. Turn it off! – If there is equipment in your office that’s not often used, keep it turned off when it’s not needed.

  13. Get on the Bus! – When traveling for business, or just for your daily commute, use mass transit trains or busses whenever possible. It’s more money- and energy-efficient than driving a car or taking a taxi.

  14. Share the Knowledge – Pass along recycling tips to others in your office to encourage greener living. Post hints on a community bulletin board or contribute to the office newsletter, and help get the word out!

  15. Encourage Green Commuting – Facilitate green commuting options. There are many ways you can make it easy or offer perks for those who choose the eco-friendly way to get to work: provide bike racks for bicyclists, help organize carpools, etc.

  16. Get in Tune – If you drive to work…or anywhere else…be sure to have your car serviced regularly. It’ll run more efficiently and save gas.

  17. Lighten Up! – Clean out your car trunk and remove luggage or equipment racks when not in use. The lighter the load means savings on fuel costs!

  18. Be a Star! – When replacing office equipment, be sure and look for the Energy Star certified products for energy-efficient use.

  19. Go the Alternate Route – When buying company vehicles, choose energy efficient models, and consider the alternate fuel or hybrid options to maximize your investment.

  20. Reuse or Recycle – If you upgrade computer equipment, cell phones or other electronics, and the cast offs are still in working order, donate them to a non-profit group who could benefit from the contribution. For non-functioning equipment, find a recycler who accepts electronic items.
